Whitesands is one of the premiere surfing beaches in Pembrokeshire and within easy reach of Galwad y Mor apartments. The beach is around half a mile of open sand with a rocky headland. To the North there is a small cove and then on to Porthmelgan beach. To the south is Porthselau facing North West and Ramsey Island is situated just off shore.

With its car park, shop and surf life saving club Whitesands is very well set up for local and visiting surfers alike. The best waves are generally acknowledged to break alongside the rocky headland at the North of the beach. This wave works at its best between mid and high tide and is locally nicknamed ‘the elevator’. However, there are good waves to be had all along the beach. Even though it can become busy in pockets there is room for everyone. West and South West swell directions make for the best waves with offshore winds coming from the East.

Surfing on Porthmawr is good most of the year round with smaller waves and flat spells during the high Summer and much bigger swells during the Spring, Autumn and Winter months. January and February produce some of the largest surf with the potential of offshore winds.
