Abermawr Beach, Pembrokeshire
Abermawr Beach is a quiet beach in north Pembrokeshire. It sits between Fishguard and St Davids. The beach feels wild, secluded and largely untouched.
What Type of Beach Is Abermawr?
Abermawr is mainly a shingle and pebble beach backed by low cliffs. Large areas of sand appear when the tide is out. The beach also has fascinating evidence of an ancient submerged forest. Tree stumps can appear from beneath the sand at low tide. The beach is also backed by marshland and woodland. Bluebells provide colourful displays around the southern end during spring.
Abermawr Accessibility
Abermawr is not suitable for wheelchair access. The path towards the beach can become slippery when wet. The route also has areas affected by coastal erosion. The pebbles contains large cobbles, which can make it difficult for those less able.
Facilities at Abermawr Beach
Abermawr Beach has no facilities directly on the beach. There are no beach toilets, cafés, shops or litter bins. Visitors should bring food, drinks and everything needed for their visit. Please take all rubbish home after your trip. The nearest local facilities are around Mathry, approximately two miles away.
Parking at Abermawr Beach
Parking at Abermawr is very limited. Roadside parking is available above the beach. The National Trust also advises limited parking around Abermawr Woods. There is no National Trust car park at Abermawr. Arrive early during busy periods and park considerately. Never block access for residents, farmers, emergency vehicles or the turning circle at the dead end where the beach is.
Wildlife
Abermawr is an excellent location for enjoying Pembrokeshire’s coastal wildlife. The surrounding marsh, woodland and coastline support varied habitats. Seals and seabirds are a common sight as the beach is often quiet.
Walks at Abermawr Beach
One of the best walks is the Abermawr Woods and Beach Walk. This circular route covers approximately one mile. The walk takes around 30 minutes without stops. It passes through woodland, meadow, marsh and shingle beach. The terrain is moderate and can become muddy. Boots or sturdy footwear are recommended.
Things to Do
At low tide, explore the exposed sand and search for ancient tree stumps. Rockpooling can also be enjoyable around the shoreline. Photography is another popular activity here.
