1. Go wild at Scolton Manor
The Welly Walk is a new family-friendly activity trail which has added obstacles which make the most of the mud!
- 21st –25th February 10am – 5pm. At the Station Farm Shop – Build your own Bat Box / Bird House / Bug Hotel / Bee Hotel to take home to your own garden – no booking necessary just, drop-in. Cost £4 – £7 depending on the type of ‘box’ made.
- Outside Edie’s tea Room, you’ll find a planting table where you can plant bulbs in a compostable pot, available in the tea shop, to take home and watch it bloom – Don’t forget to give it water every now and again.
- 21st – 24th February 12pm – 1:30pm. Love exploring? Team up with the Head Gardener on an adventure into the hedgerows and woodland of Scolton Manor in search of early wildflowers.
- 19th-21st The RSPB will also be in the park to give a helping hand to identify birdlife you spot roaming the grounds.
2. Step back in time to the Castell Henllys Iron Age Village
Visit an Iron Age village where you will meet friendly members of the tribe who will tell you all about life in the Iron Age. Watch demonstrations of ancient crafts or skills, get the ultimate Iron Age face paint with beautiful blue patterns and be entertained with ancient stories or songs.
- Quiet Sundays 20th and 27th February 10am – 1pm You can experience all that Castell Henllys has to offer however no loud or noisy activities or demonstrations will happen during this session. Normal admission applies.
- Welsh language session available for visitors who would like their experience entirely through the medium of Welsh. These sessions are also suitable for those who are learning Welsh. Booking essential.
- Join the Tribe! 15th 17th 22nd and 24th of February 10:30am-12pm & 1pm-2:30pm. Learn about the iron age way of life with talks, demonstrations and hands-on activities such as bread making, warrior training and building. Children must be supervised at all times by a paying adult. Suitable for ages 6-11 years old. Numbers limited to 15 children per session. £5 plus normal admission. Booking essential.
- Naturally Creative Celts. 14th – 27th February 10:30am-12pm and 1pm-2:30pm. The artistic workshop leader will guide adults and children in creating your own sculpture or piece of art using clay and other natural materials from the surrounding woodland. Numbers limited to 10 per session. £9 (includes admission to the Iron Age Village) Booking essentia
- Ancient Skills Workshop. 23rd February 11am-2pm. Survive the wild, prehistoric style! Learn how our ancestors made rope from various materials, the essential art of fire starting and other survival techniques. Suitable for children aged over 7 accompanied by a paying adult. Numbers limited to 6 per session. £15 (includes admission to the Iron Age Village) Booking essential.
3. Find magical creatures at Carew Castle
- Magical Creatures Treasure Trail 12th- 27th February 10:00am- 4:00pm. Giants, dragons, fairies, and mermaids are just some of the magical creatures to make their home at Carew Castle. Discover them all around the castle in a treasure hunt to claim your prize. Take part using a smart phone. £1 per child plus normal admission.
4. Swing, zip, run or cycle and let off steam at Llys y Fran
Llys y Fran lake is a fabulous fun day out for families. Outdoor play has huge mental and physical benefits for the young and young at heart, so a visit here is time well spent. It is perfectly positioned near the visitor centre with views for days across the water. You can keep a close eye on the kids while you enjoy a take away drink from the café in the Visitor Centre.
- Large, dedicated play area with swings, slides, climbing frames, rockers and the ever-popular mini zip wire. Visit before or after you explore the peace and tranquillity of the forest and lakes but put it on your to do list. A safe area for those with boundless energy to blow off steam with freedom to run around and enjoy the fresh air. Here you may also see the lesser-spotted competitive dad in his natural habitat swinging from the monkey bars. Children must be supervised at all times in the Adventure Playground but zooming down the zip wire is not obligatory for grown ups (although we bet you will be tempted). Please keep dogs out of this area – we have created a dedicated dog park for them to play in.
- There are also cycle paths for different abilities, bikes to hire if you can’t bring your own along with walks, archery, climbing wall, crazy electric buggies and even axe throwing!
5. Discover Dark Skies and starlight at Oriel y Parc
19thFebruary 10:00am – 4:00pm Join the team at Oriel y Parc as they celebrate Welsh Dark Skies Week with a fun trail. Find all the clues and fun facts hidden in the centre and grounds, then once you have completed your trail, collect a small prize! £2 per child. Be inspired to take a drive out to the coast or hills with a flask of hot chocolate and some blankets and do some star gazing of your own!
