Pembrokeshire plays host to a thriving population of Grey Seals with a great number calling Ramsey Island their home.
They are the largest of the seals in UK waters with cows weighing up to around 150kg and bulls as much as 250kg. The male grey seal can grow up to 3 metres long so they have little to worry about from predators around Pembrokeshire. Although Orca have been known to stray into local waters from time to time and take adult Grey Seals its mainly the pups that are at risk of predation.
Grey Seals eat a great variety of fish and crustaceans including Cod, Hake, Pollock, Octopus and Squid.
Grey Seal numbers increase dramatically around Pembrokeshire Islands and remote bays during the late summer as females come ashore to pup. Young Grey Seals are born with a coating of thick white fur which slowly moults during their first year. It’s easy to disturb seals with young, so seal watchers should keep their distance and respect the animals. Unwanted intrusions can result in aggressive parents and in some cases abandonment of the young.
